Academy Excellence Awards
The first Academy Excellence Awards in 2011 were a great success, thanks to the academies and partners for their tremendous support! If your academy wants to get involved in the 2012 Awards they need to register at Academy Excellence Awards.
The Academy Excellence Awards are a prestigious new student awards scheme that recognises outstanding achievements by students aged 16 - 19 studying at Academies in England.
David Ross Foundation in partnership with The University of Nottingham, Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and Independent Academies Association sponsored the 2011 awards, which celebrate excellence and encourage academy students to aspire for success.
Academy Principals nominate one student per category and one team of up to five students working together on a cross-curricular project. The subject categories for 2011 were:
- English
- Humanities
- Mathematics
- Science
- Technology
- Sustainability - a team award for students who produce the best essay on this global theme.
Students had to answer an essay question set by academics and senior faculty staff from The University of Nottingham, offering a unique opportunity to stretch and challenge students.
Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, said: "The government is rightly proud of the achievements of academies, and is encouraging more schools to apply for academy status. We are delighted therefore to endorse the Academy Excellence Awards, which provide a sense of community and collaboration amongst the academies movement and encourage students to aspire to academic excellence."
Lord Hill of Oareford CBE, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools said: "I would heartily encourage all academies to enter this prestigious new awards programme, which celebrates student success and encourages some healthy competition through a route which is academic and challenging, yet fun outside of their core qualifications and coursework."
